** The competition has now closed. This website will list winning entries following the judging process **
The Young Writers Competition is open to 18-28 year old Australians who have progressive and practical solutions to the big issues facing Australia today and can communicate that idea in a 700–1000 word opinion piece.
The winner will receive a free flight to London to undertake an internship at Demos, a leading UK think tank, and have their winning entry published in The Australian. Find out more about the great prizes and our fantastic judging panel.
You can write on any issue facing Australia that you choose. This year we are also taking up an idea from those who have suggested setting a theme to provide some inspiration. This year's theme is 'what does it mean in practice to be a progressive policymaker in Australia'? The theme is optional and you won't be marked down if you don't follow it. Remember we want your entry to offer us practical solutions to problems you identify.
This site isn't just for submitting entries. We want you to read, discuss and vote on each other's work. To have a conversation around the ideas you generate.
The top ranked entry on the site when entries close (on Monday 14 December) will go automatically through to the judges' shortlist. Of course the earlier you submit the more time you’ll have to collect votes.
So get writing!
